Programs in Egypt

The Arabic LSAP for Egypt has tremendous academic and cultural value. The trip has 60 hours of classroom instruction in Arabic, both in Standard Arabic and Colloquial dialect. In addition there are numerous short trips and tours that give the students significant glimpses into the culture, society, and history of the host country, with many opportunities to use the language. Finally, this opportunity to achieve mind-opening awareness of Arabic culture has great military and diplomatic utility for our midshipmen, which will do much to equip them for what they may encounter in the near future.

The program provides written evaluations of the students' progress, and certificates of completion of the course in Standard and the course in Egyptian dialect. Students are housed with Egyptian and Arab students in the dorm, and must interact with native speakers in numerous points of the day in the classroom setting, and in all circumstances outside the class.

In order to interact with the wider world of Arabic Speakers, students have only to walk beyond the walls of the American University to find themselves challenged and invited to interact with Arabic speakers in a wide variety of daily tasks and opportunities.
